6'6" Brittney Griner

Luckily she plays ball in Houston, because at 5'11", I would not want to D up against 15 year old, 6'6" Brittney Griner at a park in Los Angeles. My male chauvinist ego would not compute the beating I'd surely take and I'd undoubtedly get frustrated and throw an elbow which would hopefully reach her chin. Who am I kidding? I'd fake an injury and blame my 0-8 shooting and 4 turnovers on my old high school football injury.

Dunking with considerable ease, Brittney is an athletic phenomenon with talent and skill better than that of most of her male peers. Even the ease with which she performs a pull-up on the rim after her two handed dunk leads me to believe she could easily break my high school's female pull-up record of four (but I can do 23 -- let's see you beat that, Brittney!!!).

It was only a few years ago that Lisa Leslie became the first WNBA player to dunk in a game and it wasn't until last season that Candace Parker became the first college player to dunk in a game. Now, Griner has dunked twice in high school games and appears very ready to repeat these tasks in college and the pros, but not until after she continues exploiting her 70 inch wingspan while playing for the AAU Houston Hotshots .

Griner's size and athletic prowess is a clear indication to me that female hoops are headed in the right direction and deserving of the increased ESPNNews time they've recently been taking up. Hell, if things continue like this, I might not even need that old high school football injury excuse just to save face.

Rasheed Wallace Hits 60 Footer

Charles Atkinson

With his Detroit Pistons down by three, Rasheed Wallace hit a 60-foot bank-shot to send the game to overtime, leading to a win over the Denver Nuggets. After the game, his teammates clowned him because he claimed he called "bank" on the amazingly lucky bucket. Rasheed responded saying "Ok, I'm lying about that. But I'll take it either way."

A great moment for the Pistons and a heart-breaker for the Nuggets, the overtime loss puts Denver 2 1/2 games behind the Lakers for the 6th seed in the West -- not that it makes much of a difference. As a 7 seed, the Nuggets can look forward to playing the Suns in the first round, which to me doesn't sound much more appealing that playing the Spurs as a 6 seed. If last year is any indication as to how the Suns fare in the slowed-down, grind-itout pace of a 7-game series, I'd take them over the veteran Spurs any day.

The Nuggets have one chance against the Sonics to bounce back from the devastating loss before they have to go onto the road against the Suns, Seattle, and the Lakers on a three-game roadie.

March Madness: VCU vs. Duke

They don't call it March Mellowness, you know. You could hear the screams of thousands of sports fans tearing up their brackets when the VCU Rams upset Duke in the final minutes of the second quarter round. A few easy baskets and nine 3-pointers were just barely enough to launch the 11th-seated underdogs into the next round. This highlight reel from the VCU vs. Duke game makes it clear that the 2007 NCAA tourney is going to be full of surprises.

The biggest surprise for us is that CBS has no idea how to compress clean video for YouTube. And since the Viacom machine is trying to maintain a stranglehold on its copyright by being the sole provider of NCAA videos, we'll be sitting at the edge of our seats, hoping the rest of our bracket pans out -- and that someone at CBS Sports solves these digitizing problems.

Ron Artest Arrested for Domestic Dispute

Charles Atkinson
Posted March 06, 2007

When he sat out almost the entire 2004-2005 season for going into the stands, it was shocking. Demanding a trade after the Pacers stood by him while he served his suspension was absurd. Now, I honestly just get depressed every time I hear about this talented, yet troubled, once Defensive Player of the Year.

One of the most gifted players in the NBA, Ron Artest is a valuable asset on both ends of the court. Best known for his tenacious defense, Artest averages 14.8 points and over 2 steals per game in his seven seasons in the NBA. Unfortunately, Artest is only good on the court when he's actually on the court, which hasn't happened much lately.

In 2004-2005, Artest played in only seven games because of the brawl, and only sixteen the following year, sidelined by the Pacers because of a trade demand until he was picked up by the Kings. In the playoffs, Artest proved to be a valuable addition to Sacramento, and with the help of Bonzi Wells nearly knocked the Spurs out in the first round.

The Kings success didn't continue this year, nor did Ron's good behavior. A month after a $1942 fine for leaving his dogs in the pound for 77 nights, Artest's history of erratic behavior returns with a suspected domestic violence dispute resulting in his arrest and subsequent $50,000 bail.

Excused from the Kings indefinitely, Sacramento will have to try and extend their 3-game winning streak without Artest in tonight's match-up against Ron's former Pacers.
