Un-Horror Stories

Categories: Personal Production

So, I'm sure that we all have no shortage of horror stories about being a woman on set, but what have you found to be the benefits of being a production grrl*? As the only female crew member on a low-budget pilot shoot, for example, I was very popular among the teen girl cast -- because I was the only person they felt comfortable asking for feminine hygeine products. What other advantages have you found, by virtue of your gender?

*grrl, I know, is so 1997 Girl Power a term. But darn, it's fun to say!

Let me tell you this: In a recent sketch we filmed, I dressed up as a young girl and wore a bra for the first time in my life, which I now know I never want to do again. However, my dwindling masculinity aside, turning myself into a girl that day made everyone else on the set very uncomfortable because all the guys were attracted to my sock-breasts and all the girls kept trying to ask me about feminine hygiene products.

I was sooooooo mortified*!

* - I sent the above short story to YM Magazine and they refused to print it! OMG!

Guys are usually willing to help a lady that asks something with a smile. :)

Being the first steady female tech in the comedy theater I work at, it still brings a smile to my face when I climb up on the ladder to change or adjust lights and 4 or 5 guys come over and ask if they can help and when I say, "no thanks, I got it", they look like they just saw a unicorn.
