Paul Potts Wows with "Nessun Dorma"
I'm a sucker for two things: underdogs and arias. So it goes without saying that this clip from UK talent show Britain's Got Talent tugs at my delicate little heart strings like no other.
No one underestimates the significance of a Simon Cowell smile -- the guy rarely cracks one. But when Paul Potts opens his mouth and lets loose a flawless rendition of "Nessun Dorma," Cowell can't help but grin from ear to ear. Potts is a mobile salesman by day and exudes a genuine humbleness that is rare among talent show contestants. It might be early in the game, but we're betting on him to go all the way.

touching...so many souls...harmony and emotion...moving...chills and tears (well almost a tear - maybe a little welling in the eyes) - ultimately beautiful to hear the humility of one voice so strong in my favourite operatic passage - favour quote of mine? - Use the Talents you possess - the forests would be silent if no birds sang except the very best! What a song to sing.

I can't put my finger on it, but there is something magical about his voice and that performance that really touches something in us. I must have listened to this performance at least twenty times and it does the same thing every time. It's simply amazing. It doesn't matter if you watch the video or just listen to it. There is just something special about that voice. It activates some buttons hidden in us.

From Virginia, USA (across the river from Washington DC)... I saw the end of the story on the news a few nights ago. It seemed rather unbelievable, so I had to go to go online to catch the full excerpt. My taste does not normally run to opera. I've seen one opera as an 18 year old exchange student 22 years ago at Covent Garden. It was ok, but I felt no need to go to another. I own no opera CDs. But this.... wow! The hair on my arms and neck stood up and I had tears in my eyes by the end. I've watched your clips dozens of times now and each time I still tear up. Your voice is beautiful. You are going to convert me to an opera fan. I will buy your CD as soon as it comes out and would love to hear you sing in person. Please tour America!
Winning BGT was but a footnote in this mans future. Not since Pavarotti has the world heard a voice like this.
Anyone that can bring most of the world to tears with their singing is not just someone who "could very well win BGT"..as Piers said. Those who witnessed "Nessun Dorma" on that particular night, will forever remember that special moment and can say "I was there to see a star born". He will go on to become the most famous singer since Caruso and Pavarotti...there's no doubt in my mind.
